Born in Cebu City, Philippines, Stephanie Misa is a doctoral researcher at the University of the Arts Helsinki. She currently lives in Vienna, Austria where she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2012 in Performative Arts & Sculpture with Prof. Monica Bonvicini. She has her masters from the Interactive Telecommunications Program, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
Her work consistently displays an interest in complex and diverse histories, relating to these topics through her video work, sculpture, installations, prints, and collages. Her current artistic research looks at the persistence of languages relegated to its oral form, and the activation of this “orality” outside the usual educational modes of instruction— its evolution, cannibalism, appropriation of terms, and creative becomings.
Recent shows and projects have been with the Yuka Tsuruno Gallery (JP), Wiener Festwochen 2017(AT), Parallel Wien 2016 (AT), Galerie 5020 (AT), VBKÖ (AT), Gymnasium Gallery (UK), Studio Kalahan (IDN), Nha San Collective (VT), Koganei Art Spot & Musashino Art University (JP), Galeria Carlos Fuentes (MX), and the WeltMuseum Wien (AT) to name a few. She was a recipient of the Kültür Gemma Bursary 2014-15 and received the Artists’ Residency for Visual Arts from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Arts & Culture for Jogjakarta, Indonesia in 2016.
